Unity, Vision, and Progress: A Christmas Call to the South East
Christmas is a season rich with spiritual and historical significance. It reminds us of the journey of Joseph and Mary to their hometown in obedience to a census—an act of order and collective responsibility that marked the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. That historic moment teaches us enduring lessons about organization, unity, and the power of shared purpose.
In much the same way, the Christmas season today draws our people home. From far and near, sons and daughters of the South East return to their communities. Families reunite, old friendships are renewed, and cultural ties are strengthened. This annual homecoming is more than a celebration; it is a powerful opportunity we must not overlook.
It is in this spirit that a call is made for a mini head count across the South East during this festive period. Such an exercise would help us better understand our numerical strength, population distribution, and community presence. Accurate knowledge of our people is essential for effective planning, informed decision-making, and strategic development.
Beyond statistics, this initiative would enhance planning for security, community development, education, and social services. It would also deepen unity, as our people come together with a shared vision for collective progress and a renewed sense of belonging.
Importantly, this mini census would also bridge generational gaps. Those who have lived away for many years would reconnect with their roots and come to know the younger ones born into their families and communities in their absence. This reconnection strengthens identity, continuity, and cultural pride.
Politically, the period offers a rare opportunity for leaders and stakeholders in the South East to engage, reflect, and strategize on how the Igbo people can remain relevant and influential in future elections and national affairs. Unity and accurate data remain critical tools for effective representation.
In line with this vision, Adighibe Maduakolam calls on well-meaning Igbos to use this Christmas season to organize “Break Fast Meetings” in their various localities. These gatherings should serve as platforms for dialogue, reconciliation, planning, and renewed commitment to the unity of the South East.
As we celebrate Christmas, let us look beyond the festivities. Let us embrace the opportunity it offers to strengthen our unity, sharpen our vision, and lay a solid foundation for sustainable progress in the South East. Together, guided by purpose and collective responsibility, we can shape a stronger future for our people.
