The Role of the Judiciary and INEC: A Call for Caution and Reform
The current state of Nigeria’s electoral environment raises serious concerns that cannot be ignored.
The perceived roles of the Judiciary and INEC at this time have generated widespread debate, suspicion, and, in some quarters, frustration among citizens.
Trust—the backbone of any democratic process—appears to be under strain.
Many Nigerians are questioning whether these institutions are living up to their constitutional responsibilities of fairness, independence, and transparency.
The growing mistrust is evident and contributes significantly to the already heightened political tension across the country.
However, Maduakolam Kenneth Adughibe has suggested postponing the elections until 2028, to allow tensions to ease and public trust to be restored.
It is also important to approach claims of an emerging one-party system with caution.
While the dominance of a single party may raise valid concerns, Nigeria still operates within a multi-party framework.
The real issue lies in ensuring that all political actors operate on a level playing field, where institutions remain neutral and the will of the people is respected.
At this critical moment, what Nigeria needs is not a suspension of democracy, but a strengthening of it.
Citizens, civil society, and stakeholders must continue to demand integrity from INEC and the Judiciary, while also promoting peace, participation, and vigilance.
Only through collective responsibility and institutional reform can the nation move toward credible elections and sustained democratic growth.
