Advice to the Present NWC of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)
As Nigeria approaches another critical electoral season, the role of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress becomes more strategic than ever. With the growing influence of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially in attracting governors and political heavyweights across party lines, the opposition must rethink and strengthen its approach.
The reality on ground suggests that the ruling party continues to consolidate power by aligning with key political actors. However, elections in Nigeria are not won solely in high-level political circles—they are decided by the people at the grassroots.
My advice to the NWC of the African Democratic Congress, particularly as the congress approaches, is to adopt a more inclusive and strategic grassroots-driven model:
1. Build Strong Opposition Alliances
The ADC should extend its reach to other opposition parties and movements. There are many credible, reliable, and truly committed opposition figures across Nigeria who may feel sidelined in their current platforms. Bringing such individuals into a united ADC coalition will strengthen the party’s national presence and credibility.
2. Prioritize Credibility Over Popularity
It is not enough to gather numbers; the focus should be on individuals with integrity, grassroots acceptance, and a proven record of service. These are the people who can mobilize voters genuinely and sustainably.
3. Grassroots Mobilization is Key
While the ruling All Progressives Congress may dominate the urban political structure—what some may call the “city boys”—the real electoral strength lies in the villages, communities, and rural areas. The ADC must empower “village boys and village girls”—the everyday Nigerians who form the majority of voters.
4. Decentralize Responsibility
Leadership and responsibilities should not be concentrated at the top. The ADC should assign clear roles at ward, local government, and state levels, ensuring that the coalition structure is active and functional down to the grassroots.
5. Engage the Masses with Purpose
The party must connect with the people not just politically, but socially and economically—understanding their needs, addressing their concerns, and presenting realistic solutions.
In conclusion, while political alignments at the top may shape narratives, it is the masses who determine outcomes. If the African Democratic Congress can successfully organize, empower, and mobilize grassroots support, then indeed, the votes of the people will count—and make a decisive difference.
