Unconstitutional Political Rotation of Presidency

From the above headline, it is evident that the issue of political rotation of the presidency remains a deeply sensitive and controversial matter in Nigeria’s democratic journey. While the principle of zoning or rotation is often presented as a tool for equity and national balance, it becomes unconstitutional and unjust when it is manipulated to exclude a particular region from attaining the highest office in the land.

If the South East fails to secure the number one position of this country in the 2027 general election, it would clearly suggest that the Igbo people are destined—by design or by circumstance—to continue playing second fiddle in Nigeria’s political structure. Such a reality would not only deepen the sense of marginalization but also raise serious concerns about fairness, inclusion, and true national unity.

The critical question then becomes: what hope remains for the common Nigerian in the coming years? A system that consistently sidelines a section of the country cannot genuinely promise justice, equity, or progress. When merit, competence, and equal opportunity are overshadowed by political convenience and sectional interests, the foundation of democracy is weakened.

From current developments and political alignments, it is increasingly obvious that certain individuals within the South East are, knowingly or unknowingly, contributing to the continued political disadvantage of the region. Personal interests, disunity, and lack of strategic coordination appear to be undermining the collective aspiration of the Igbo people.

This situation is both unfortunate and unacceptable.

There is an urgent need for decisive action to salvage this growing concern. The South East must rise above internal divisions and speak with one voice. A “Home Coming” meeting of key stakeholders—political leaders, traditional rulers, intellectuals, youth representatives, and business elites—is necessary. Such a gathering would serve as a platform for honest dialogue, unity of purpose, and strategic decision-making.

The time has come to redefine priorities, strengthen alliances, and present a formidable front that cannot be ignored in national politics. The pursuit of the presidency should not be seen as a regional entitlement, but as a legitimate demand for inclusion, fairness, and balance in the Nigerian federation.

Nigeria belongs to all, and every region must be given a fair opportunity to lead.

Only through unity, courage, and deliberate action can the South East reposition itself and reclaim its rightful place in the nation’s political landscape.
